Directed, filmed and edited by Zai, this short documentary was made after five years looking for and spending time with the Orang Laut (sea gyspies) in the Riau Archipelago between Singapore and Sumatra. It is an ode to the nomadic people who are struggling with the disappearing landscapes and way of living due to complex political, economic, religious, and social prejudices. The film also features composition by bassist/composer Tetsu Saitoh.
Riau is a permanent collection of Fukuoka Museum of Art and Singapore Art Museum.
Even Dogs have Choices (2003)
Directed, filmed and edited by Zai in collaboration with Lee Pheng Guan (cinematography). This is a short performance film that documents the heavily tattooed Singapore pop star DJ X’Ho. He is in a tattoo parlor where he speaks while being penned on his penis. As the Censorship Board’s demand of re-cutting the film was rejected, the film was banned from showing in Singapore. It was subsequently showed at International Film Festival Rotterdam.
